Frequently Asked Questions

Where can I buy your grass seed mix and other products?

On the “Dealer Locator” page on our website, you can select the product you are looking for and the city. It will tell you the closest garden center to you that carries the grass seed mix. Thanks for your interest, and thank you for writing in.

Does your Richlawn Turf Food get old or expire?

Richlawn Turf Food does not expire or lose its effectiveness as long as it remains dry and granulated. It is important to store it where it does not get moisture or it will cake up and render it unusable in the fertilizer spreader.

Hi. I have two small dogs, and I am trying to find a fertilizer that will green my lawn and present no danger to my dogs. How long would I have to wait before letting my dogs walk on the grass after fertilizing it?

Any of the Richlawn products can be used on your lawn and are safe for pets to be on the grass right after application. Follow the label directions and water the turf fertilizer in and once it’s dry, the dogs can romp about. Unlike some fertilizers that contain herbicides or fungicides, Richlawn is organic-based and does not contain harmful attributes

I'm interested in doing my own fertilization this year. Overwhelmed with how to proceed. Will you assist me which of your products should be used when? Also, do you recommend a drop or broadcast spreader?

I would recommend our Pro-Rich Turf Food. It has a higher nitrogen content which is ideal to get the lawn off to a healthy start. We have a fertilizer reminder that we send out over the season as the time comes for the next application. You can sign up for it on our website. As to the spreader, the type whether it is a drop or broadcast doesn’t really matter. It’s just a matter of personal preference.

I recently moved to the Denver area from Michigan. I have always been a Scott's fertilizer, but some of my neighbors told me I should switch to your Richlawn Pro-Rich. Why should I do that?

Because our soils are very different than other parts of the U.S., more alkaline and lacking in organic matter, fertilizers can make a difference in how plants respond. National brands are okay, but lack some of the micronutrients that are needed in our regional soil conditions. Richlawn fertilizers are formulated for the Rocky Mountain Region, plus they are organic-based and overall will help improve the structure of our alkaline, clay soils.

I am planning to apply Richlawn Turf Food, but possible snow and colder temperatures are expected. Is it safe to apply your product under these conditions?

It is perfectly safe and ideal to apply Richlawn organic-based lawn fertilizer prior to moisture. Cold temperatures will not inhibit the effect of the fertilizer. If you can, core-aerate the lawn prior to fertilizing so the nutrients will filter down into the soil and increase assimilation.

Hello, I have a new customer that has a very large yard with chicken. What is a natural organic fertilizer that you would recommend me to use in their lawn

Thanks for your question. I would recommend our OMRI certified organic 5-3-2. It is a 40lb bag and is sold at Home Depot and Lowe's. It is 100% poultry manure.

Is Second Harvest Mulch safe for a vegetable garden?

Thanks for your question. Second Harvest mulch is perfectly safe to use in any landscape area, including a vegetable garden.

I planted EZgreen grass seed in my front yard. I had to reseed half of it. I broke up the dirt and used a grass seed spreader and then covered the seed with a thin layer of peat moss. I planted the seed on May 24th and have been watering it morning and night and i have no new grass growing. Any advise on what i could do different or how I can get this grass to grow in my front yard? I live in Falcon Colorado. Thank you!

Thanks for your question. This is always difficult to answer because there are so many variables that affect the timing of germination. Typically, you should start seeing new grass in about 10 days which is where we are right now. I'm not sure if any of these are a possibility, but here are a few things that could affect it:

If you covered the seed with more an a sixteenth of an inch of peat moss that could slow it down
If you are under or overwatering the seed that could also affect it and slow down germination
Using an herbicide to kill weeds prior to seeding is harmful to the seed

I would say to give it a few more days and hopefully you will start to see it.

Can product be applied on 90-degree days?

Thanks for your note. Our products are non-burning so temperature is not really a factor. Just be sure to water it in after you apply it.

Is this turf food safe for new sod? Thank you!

Thanks for your question. Any of our fertilizers are safe to use on new sod. They will help develop the root system faster, and provide needed nourishment for slow and steady growth. Be sure to water your new sod frequently so it will attach to the soil and so it doesn't dry out.

Should you put Pro-Rich on a stressed lawn

Thanks for your question. Yes, it is safe to put Pro-Rich on a stressed lawn. Nutrients will help to bring it out of the stress, and back to more of a normal condition.
I have seen a few stressed lawns lately, and if yours is typical, the stress is from the temperatures getting warmer and the rain pattern we were in not being there as much.
Be sure to water the turf after you fertilize to the nutrients can break down and begin to nourish the lawn.

If you have any other questions, please let me know.

Hello, I used the richlawn turf food and a couple pellets got onto my concrete and stained it in a couple spots. What is the best way to remove those stains effectively? Thank you. Grass looks great btw

Thanks for your question. Iron is what causes staining if not swept or blown off of concrete. There is a product called Iron Out, that was created for this issue. I have seen it at ACE Hardware and online also.

I have a 5 acre grass field near Golden Colorado. I grown high protein orchard grass for horses. In the past I have been using 100% urea but I can no longer afford it. My question is do you have a product that will give me similar results . I bought one of your products at the Home Depot in Brighton and it was reasonably priced. Carlo Gaines

Thanks for your question. The product I would recommend to you is our Richlawn Pro-Rich. It comes in a 40lb bag, and covers 5,600 sf. The analysis is 14-2-5 and it is 70% organic. It is available at almost all garden centers, ACE Hardware stores and also through our distributor CPS.

I hope this helps. If you have any other questions, please let me know.

Would E-Z Green Grass Seed be a good choice for California, Zone 9? Also, Lowes has it listed as organic but I don't see the word, organic in the picture of the package. Thanks.

Thanks for your question. Our EZ Green grass seed blend is a mixture that is normally considered to be "cool season" grasses which is more of a zone 5-6. There is no reason why it wouldn't work in your area though. I couldn't guarantee that it is organic because the different varieties are sourced from several growers in Oregon, Washington, and Canada, but almost all grass seed is grown organically.

I hope this helps.

Where can I find EKO Lawn Topdressing in Longmont, Colorado?

Thanks for your question. We are working with The Flower Bin to add it to their lineup. Until that happens, the nearest dealer is McGuckin Hardware in Boulder.

Hello! I just learned about your product. I live in Castle Rock. My lawn has had zero applications of anything this year. How would you recommend I start with your products and how will it fit in with your recommended schedule? Thanks!! Dave

Hi Dave:

I would recommend our Richlawn Turf Food. Apply about every 6-7 weeks throughout the season. You will have the best lawn on the block. It is available at Home Depot and Lowe's in Castle Rock .

Thanks for your question.

I have new RTF grass and it is time for a grow-in fertilizer. Do you have one that will work for grow-in. I live in the Denver, CO area. Thanks.

Thanks for your question. I would recommend our Richlawn Turf Food. It's made in Colorado and is an all-season fertilizer. It is available at Home Depot and Lowe's.

I am looking for something to get rid of the dandelions and clover growing in my yard. Does Richlawn produce a product like this? I live in Frederick, CO. Thank you!!

Thanks for your question. All of our products are organic-based or 100% organic, so we don't use any chemicals at all. I would recommend you use a liquid spot treatment for weed and clover control. There should be some knowledgeable people at the ACE Hardware near you that could guide you.

Our lawn has been looking wonderful using Organic 100. So pleased with the health and beauty of our gress. We fertilized our lawn for the second time this season and our grass looking like it Ike it is burned from the fertilizer. How can we rectify this issue? We would really appreciate your help.

Thanks for your question. It is almost impossible to burn turfgrass with 5-3-2. What you are seeing is the effect of the warmer and drier weather on the grass.

Be sure you are giving your lawn adequate water. Lawns in Colorado need 1 inch of water per week, any maybe a little more depending on soil and lawn conditions.

can you apply this Iron Rich in over 90 degree temp or can you apply it the day before it starts to hit 90. Can I apply it late June in colorado. Is there any danger of over applying?

Thanks for your question. It is safe to use any of our products when temperatures are warm. Just be sure to sweep off your sidewalk or driveway to avoid staining from the iron, and water it in as you would any fertilizer.

What is in your Nature's Yield that looks similar to pea gravel?

Thanks for your question. It is volcanic pumice.

Where can I buy your products. I live in Montrose, CO 81401

Thanks for your note. Your local ACE Hardware store has access to most of our products through their distribution center. Our vendor number is 47352, and Home Depot in Montrose carries our EKO Compost.

Your website is not working. Is there any where on the western slope of CO that sells your products or can I order direct from you

We are working to increase our presence on our western slope. ACE Hardware stores have access to our products through their distribution center under our vendor number 47352. That is the best option for now.

Thanks for your note.

June has both pro-rich and iron-rich. Can you apply them at the same time or need to space it out a bit? thanks!

Thanks for your question. The calendar is being re-done because it is a bit confusing. There is no need to do Pro-Rich and Iron-Rich at the same time. I would recommend you stick with a regular fertilization program and then supplement it with Iron-Rich in between applications to maintain the deep green color throughout the summer.

Can you apply iron rich when temperature is in 90. Thank you

Any of our products can be applied in warm temperatures. Just be sure the lawn is dry when you apply it, then water normally when you're done. Don't forget to sweep or blow off any concrete to avoid staining.

Thanks for your note.

Hello. What product should I use on my lawn now? There's very little rain in my area of Colorado (Front Range), lots of heat and sunshine, and lots of hot wind. I have a combination of grass types: Kentucky Bluegrass, some ryegrass, and some fesque. The soil is not especially good and many parts of the lawn burn up quickly. Thank you

Thanks for your note. I would recommend our Richlawn Turf Food. Use if about every 6-7 weeks throughout the growing season and you will have a healthy green lawn. It is available at Home Depot and Lowe's stores from Ft.Collins to Pueblo.

Are you still producing Richlawn Pro Turf Grass Seed with the hybrid bluegrass seed? I have not been able to find any information about it.

Thanks for your question. We are still making Pro-Turf Grass Seed. Here are a few dealers around the Denver metro that sell it. I would point out though, that this is the most difficult time of the year to grow grass from seed because of the high temperatures and the fact that seed must stay damp until germination. It can be done; it just takes a little more attention than normal.

Where can I buy your “gro-rich garden fertilizer “ with DPW? I live in Firestone C0. Flowering and Budget Home Suply in Longmont don’t have it.

Thanks for your question. you might want to call first, but The Flower Bin in Longmont normally carries it. 303-772-3454.

I purchased a few bags of the eko top dressing in the fall and didn’t get a chance to use it. Stored it in my garage over the winter and when I opened it today it was full of what looks like gnats. Can I still use it? What should I do with it?

Gnats are drawn to moisture, and compost in a bag over a period of time would contain some moisture. I would go ahead and use it as planned. They are not harmful, and once exposed to the air, the compost will dry a bit and they will be gone.

Thanks for your note.

which is best for weed & feed for new sod?

Thank you for your question. We don't produce any weed & feed products. I would recommend not using one on new sod, or any grass this time of year though. They are synthetic fertilizers which are high in nitrogen, and can damage new turf in warm weather. A better choice would be our Richlawn Turf Food to establish the new roots and help the grass grow naturally. If necessary use a spot weed killer that targets individual weeds.

Best way to remove stains which appear as rust stains on concrete as result of getting small amount of Pro-Rich on driveway and sidewalk?

There is a product called Iron-Out that, was made specifically for this reason. I have seen it at ACE Hardware and online.

Thanks for your question.

What's the difference between your rich lawn turf food and your iron-rich product? Also I noticed your iron-rich product does not have the three numbers on it N,P,K. What are the three numbers in your iron-rich bag? Thanks

Richlawn Turf Food is a 10-2-5 balanced fertilizer. Iron-Rich is 3-2-1 and contains 10% Iron and 5% sulfur. It is a supplement to be used in between fertilizations, and to add extra Iron to trees and other plants in the landscape.

Thanks for your question.
